Kintore Hydrogen | Hydrogen Plant Design 

We worked with Worley, providing full-time Safety Engineering support to the Kintore Hydrogen FEED project in Scotland for a period of ~18 months. This was a unique and exciting project at the very cuttting-edge of technology: a large 500MW hydrogen production facility to be built in phases up to 3GW scale. During this time, we built-up a significant in-house knowledge base and capability in hydrogen safety, hydrogen safety studies and hydrogen plant design. Significant technical challenges were overcome by the team. We supported various hydrogen plant design safety engineering activities and deliverables for the hydrogen plant and feel proud and privileged to have been an integral part of the Worley project team.

West Coast Railways | Transport Risk Assessment 

Safety Engineering Solutions carried out a transport risk assessment, including LOPA, Bowtie analysis, and Human Factors (HF) risk assessment, as well as an ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) demonstration supported by a cost benefit analysis, for West Coast Railways Ltd in support of ongoing regulatory compliance for various heritage train services using slam-door rolling stock including those featured in the Harry Potter movies. We met with the Regulator (ORR) at their offices in Canary Wharf to discuss and resolve comments on the work. 

Essar Energy Transition Fuels |HAZOP Facilitation, LOPA Assessment 

We have facilitated several project FEED and detailed engineering HAZOPs directly for Essar Energy Transition Fuels (Essar Oil (UK)) at the Stanlow refinery in the UK, providing both Facilitator and Scribe.  Direct Air Ltd | Nitrogen Generator HAZOP & Risk Assessment 

We carried out a HAZOP assessment for a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) nitrogen generation package based at a UK nuclear fuels reprocessing facility for Direct Air Ltd. Safety Engineering Solutions Ltd facilitated the HAZOP workshop, developed the terms of reference and HAZOP workshop report and oversaw the close-out of the HAZOP actions. We also carried out asphyxiant nitrogen dispersion modelling using Phast software for atmospheric vents on the package including the blowdown vent stack and pressure safety valve (PSV) atmospheric vents to determine their safe height and safe separation from people and buildings to limit potential for asphyxiation from oxygen depletion. 

Bilfinger UK | Pressurised Hydrogen Tube Trailer Supply to Hydrogen Fuel Cells

We carried out a comprehensive occupied buildings risk assessment (OBRA) for Bilfinger UK to support brown field construction at a UK natural gas compressor station owned by their client. 
 
The project involved screening the relevant fire and explosion consequences scenarios from the compressor station based on an existing site quantitative risk assessment (QRA) to determine the risk to personnel housed in portable buildings at various locations. The impacts from a nearby electrical substation were also determined using guidance in the IEEE Standard 979 'IEEE Guide for Substation Fire Protection'.  
 
The risk-based methodology used followed the Chemical Industries Association's (CIA) 'Guidance for the location and design of occupied buildings on chemical manufacturing and similar major hazard sites'. The design of the portable buildings was subject to an ALARP demonstration, supported by cost benefit analysis (CBA).

Nitrogen Risk Assessment
We provided comprehensive safety engineering support to Bilfinger UK to support the consequence modelling and fire and explosion risk assessment (FERA) for a new standalone hydrogen fuel cell facility at a UK manufacturing plant. The fuel cells provided a reliable, standalone / backup source of electrical power for the site. 
 
The project involved determining the consequences of a loss of primary containment from a pressurised hydrogen tube trailer at 300barg, with an integral let-down station, feeding a series of low pressure hydrogen fuel cells. The onsite and offsite fire and explosion consequence impacts were assessed based on credible fire and explosion events and the results were then considered in the final design of the project. The consequence modelling was carried out using DNV's Phast Online

Safety Engineering Solutions Ltd have been working independently on behalf of Statera Energy Projects Ltd to review, verify and assure the close-out of HAZID, HAZOP and LOPA workshop recommendations for a new UK natural gas peaking plant project.  
 
Working independently, but as an integral part of the project team, we reviewed several hundred recommendations from the project safety studies and provided timely safety engineering guidance, insight and knowledge to ensure the satisfactory close-out and approval of the recommendations over several months, liaising with the actionees, as necessary.  
 
This work was an important element of the Process Safety Management System at Statera Energy Projects Ltd. 
 
 
 
 

Statera Energy Projects Ltd | ALARP Demonstration for a Gas Peaking project 

Safety Engineering Solutions Ltd have been working independently on behalf of Statera Energy Projects Ltd to develop an ALARP (as low as resonanably practical) demonstration for a new UK natural gas peaking plant project.  
 
The work involved facilitating an ALARP workshop (based on a review of the project HAZOP), and developing the report, including performing cost benefit analysis (CBA). 

Testek Solutions | Jet Aviation Fuel Pump Test Stand  

Safety Engineering Solutions Ltd assisted Testek Solutions with ATEX compliance for a jet aircraft fuel pump test stand for a facility in the EU. 
 
The work involved carrying out a very detailed hazardous area classification assessment, including performing enclosure mechanical ventilation adequacy modelling by applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques (using Gexcon's FLACS software); facilitating a comprehensive HAZOP; and carrying out a detailed fire and explosion assessment (FEA) including an ALARP demonstration and bowtie diagrams, to underpin the ATEX compliance. The consequence modelling and CFD ventilation assessment were supported with the help of Gexcon UK.
